Language Education the Fun Way

15/03/2017 Learning Resource Language Schools created by SC GEOS Team, Rewritten by Melissa Lang

Listening and speaking skills are especially important and difficult for students learning another language. The SC GEOS School in New York decided to try a more fun approach.

Sometimes having fun and being outside the conventional classroom setting is the best way to learn. A large number of students either want to focus mostly on listening and speaking skills, or have the most challenges learning them. Therefore our English school in New York decided to focus more on those skills during an out of classroom activity.  Teachers collaborated with students to choose a TV show, which they watched at home and discussed in class afterwards.

Watching television in addition to their studies can help students pick up the subtle and very common nuances in everyday language such as slang, accent and other common words that are used often in everyday life. “ Watching TV sitcoms is one of the best ways to improve English vocabulary and to learn how to speak English more fluently”, according to FluentU.com.  Fun and education is like the best of both worlds. Who would have thought that learning a language could be benefited through the television screen!
